Appalachian State University Publisher Description
Appalachian Journal has been published by Appalachian Journal & Appalachian State University since 1972, when folklorist/literary scholar Cratis Williams supported its founding to serve and become the standard for the emerging interdisciplinary field of Appalachian Studies. Edited by J.W. Williamson from 1972 to 2000, and by Sandra Ballard since 2000, Appalachian Journal reflects a broad spectrum approach to the serious study of the Appalachian mountain region of the United States. Appalachian State University has evolved from a teachers college to one of the 16 universities in the UNC system. This comprehensive regional university offers more than 140 graduate and undergraduate majors, including the only M.A. in Appalachian Studies in the nation. ASU contributes significantly to educational and research activities focusing on the Appalachian region by sponsoring the Center for Appalachian Studies, the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection in its Belk Library & Information Commons, and Appalachian Journal.
